Wheelchair accessible tours in Rovaniemi: what our tour pages say

StayLapland Kuoksa Reindeer adventure activity. Reindeer tour, reindeer safari. Kuoksa Reindeer stories, kuoksa wilderness park, rovaniemi, lapland, finland

Every winter we get the same careful questions by email and WhatsApp: can my father join if he uses a wheelchair, can we bring the pram, is the reindeer sleigh easy to get into? They are good questions, and they deserve straight answers rather than reassuring guesses.

This page collects what our own product pages say about accessibility, explains why most of our outdoor tours are marked as not wheelchair or stroller accessible, and tells you exactly how to ask us about your situation before you pay for anything.

The short answer: almost all of our outdoor tours in Rovaniemi, including the Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure (from 159 €, 3 hours, rated very easy), are listed on their product pages as not wheelchair accessible and not stroller accessible. The one experience we list as accessible for everyone is the Private Santa’s Surprise visit in your own hotel room at Postmaster Hotel or Aurora Hill Resort. For anything else, write to us before booking and we will tell you honestly what is and is not possible.

What our product pages say about accessibility

Each tour page on staylapland.com has an Accessibility section, and that is the text we stand behind. For the large majority of our tours it reads the same two lines: not wheelchair accessible, not stroller accessible. That applies to our reindeer, husky, snowmobile, Northern Lights, snowshoeing and ice-fishing tours, and to the private versions of those tours as well.

A few pages add more detail that matters when you plan:

Some pages, mainly our packages, spa experiences and celebrations, do not have an accessibility line at all. That does not mean they are accessible; it means the page does not say, and you should ask us.

Why most of our outdoor tours are not wheelchair accessible

Our tours take place outdoors in Lapland, in the forest and on snow. On the Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure, for example, the heart of the tour is a 2–3 km reindeer safari in the forest, sitting in a sleigh. Getting there means a car transfer, walking on snowy ground at the farm and climbing into and out of the sleigh. These are the reasons the page does not list the tour as wheelchair or stroller accessible.

We would rather say this plainly than let you find out in the car park. If a tour is not suitable for your group, we will tell you so and help you look at what else might work.

Difficulty is not the same as accessibility

Many of our tours are graded “Very easy” or “Easy”. The Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure and the Northern Lights Tour in Atmospheric Cottage are both rated very easy; the Ranua zoo visit is rated easy. That grade describes how physically demanding the activity is for someone who can walk and move without assistance. It is not a promise about wheelchair access, step-free routes or accessible toilets.

Our separate article on how we grade StayLapland tours explains what each difficulty level means in practice.

Strollers, babies and small children

Strollers are a common question from families. Our tour pages list the outdoor tours as not stroller accessible, so please plan on leaving the pram at your accommodation. A few more rules from the product pages are worth knowing before you book:

If you are travelling with a baby or a toddler and are unsure whether a tour makes sense, send us their age when you write and we will answer for that specific tour.

What helps: pick-ups, private tours and in-room experiences

Some parts of how we run tours can make a day easier for guests with limited mobility, even when the tour itself is not accessible:

How to ask us before you book

The most useful thing you can do is write to us before booking and describe your situation: whether someone uses a wheelchair or a walking aid, how far they can walk on snow, whether they can step up into a vehicle or a sleigh, and the ages of any small children. The more specific you are, the more specific our answer can be.

Write to booking@staylapland.com or send a WhatsApp message to +358 40 128 7846. We will reply with what the tour involves and whether we think it is realistic. If the answer is no, we will say so.

It also helps to know our booking cut-off times, which vary by tour; our article on how late you can book tours in Rovaniemi lists how they work, so leave time for the conversation before the cut-off.

Small print that affects every booking

A few rules on our tour pages apply whatever your mobility, and they are worth reading before you book:

Book this if, or choose something else if

Book the Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure if everyone in your group can walk a short distance on snow and get in and out of a sleigh; it is one of our gentlest outdoor tours and includes warm winter clothing, cookies and juice, and time with the reindeer and our guides. If someone in your group uses a wheelchair, please do not book an outdoor tour before you have heard back from us. If you are staying at Postmaster Hotel or Aurora Hill Resort over Christmas, the in-room Santa visit is the experience we can offer to everyone. You can see all our tours on the activities in Rovaniemi page.

Frequently asked questions

Are StayLapland tours wheelchair accessible?

Most of our outdoor tours are listed on their product pages as not wheelchair accessible and not stroller accessible. The Private Santa’s Surprise visit, which takes place in your hotel room at Postmaster Hotel or Aurora Hill Resort, is listed as accessible for everyone. Please contact us before booking to discuss your situation.

Can we bring a stroller on the reindeer tour?

The Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure page lists the tour as not stroller accessible, so please leave the pram at your accommodation. Infants must not sit on laps on this tour.

Is the Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure suitable for someone with limited mobility?

It is rated very easy, but it is not wheelchair accessible, and the tour involves a car transfer, walking on snowy ground and a 2–3 km sleigh ride in the forest. Write to us with details and we will tell you honestly whether it is realistic.

Do you pick up from our hotel?

On most tours, pick-ups are included within a 10 km radius of Rovaniemi city centre in an air-conditioned car, and custom pick-up is possible on request. Please wait in your hotel lobby 10 minutes before the pick-up time.

What is the minimum age for your tours?

It depends on the tour. Children under 13 must be accompanied by adults paying the full price, the snowshoeing tour is not recommended for children under 7, and the summer jet ski safaris have a minimum age of 4. Each product page lists its own rules.

How do I ask about accessibility before booking?

Email booking@staylapland.com or send a WhatsApp message to +358 40 128 7846 with the details of your group, and we will answer for the specific tour you are looking at.
