StayLapland nature tours 2026–2027: waterfalls, zoo, snowshoes

StayLapland Korouoma activity, Korouoma safari, korouoma tour in rovaniemi, lapland. Frozen waterfalls.

Not every day in Lapland needs an engine or a sled team. Many of our guests ask us for something quieter: a walk into a frozen canyon, a morning on snowshoes in the forest, a day with Arctic animals or a trip out onto the frozen sea. For winter 2026–2027 we run five tours like this from Rovaniemi, and this page explains what each one is, how the day goes and who it suits.

Everything below comes from our own product pages, including prices, durations and the small print. If something you need to know is not written here, ask us when booking and we will answer honestly.

In short: our nature tours for 2026–2027 are the Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls Hike (from 139 €, 6 hours, challenging), Frozen Waterfalls & Hidden Café Lunch at Auttiköngäs (from 159 €, 5 hours, moderate), the Snowshoeing Tour in the Private Kuoksa Wilderness (from 89 €, 3,5 hours, easy), the Ranua WildLife Zoo Park Visit (from 139 €, 5 hours, easy) and the Polar Explorer Icebreaker Cruise Experience (from 425 €, 8 hours 30 minutes, easy). You can see them all together on our nature and culture tours page.

Korouoma: our longest walk, into a canyon of frozen waterfalls

Korouoma is a Finnish nature reserve known in winter for its frozen waterfalls, where you will often see ice climbers on the rock walls. Our Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls Hike is a 6-hour day and the only tour on this page we grade as challenging, so it is the one to pick if you want to feel that you have walked somewhere.

We pick you up (pick-ups and drop-offs are included within a 10 km radius of Rovaniemi city centre), dress you in our winter clothing (overalls, boots, gloves and socks in adult and child sizes) and give you ice grippers for your shoes. In the reserve your guide tells you about the area, and along the way there is local berry juice and light snacks.

Auttiköngäs: frozen waterfalls with a homemade lunch

If Korouoma sounds like more walking than you want, Frozen Waterfalls & Hidden Café Lunch is the gentler waterfall day. Your guide picks you up in Rovaniemi and we drive for about an hour along Finland’s longest river to the frozen waterfalls of Auttiköngäs. There we take a peaceful walk around the falls and the nature trails, then warm up with a homemade lunch at a small cabin café run by locals, with salmon soup or vegetable soup.

The tour lasts 5 hours and is graded moderate. We lend overalls, shoes and gloves; if you have proper gear of your own, you are welcome to wear it. Please note the booking terms here are different from our other nature tours: bookings are non-refundable and all sales are final, and the booking cut-off is 12 hours.

Snowshoeing in Kuoksa, our private wilderness

Kuoksa Wilderness Park is our family’s private destination outside Rovaniemi; four generations of the family have lived connected to this land. The Snowshoeing Tour in the Private Kuoksa Wilderness starts at our dressing room, where we fit your winter clothing and hand out snowshoes and ski poles. Then we drive about 40 minutes to our private area and walk into the forest the Finn-Lappish way.

The hike ends at a traditional teepee with a light barbecue over the campfire and hot berry juice. At 3,5 hours and graded easy, it is our shortest and most affordable nature tour, from 89 €. It is not recommended for children under 7 years old.

Ranua Wildlife Park: a day with Arctic animals

Our Ranua WildLife Zoo Park Visit takes you to the Arctic wildlife park at Ranua, where in winter the whole park is under snow and ice. The animals you can see there include reindeer, wolves, brown bears, elk, many bird species and the polar bear. It is a 5-hour tour graded easy, from 139 €, and lunch is included.

The cancellation terms are specific to this tour: we charge a 15 % fee if the booking is cancelled 15 days or less before the tour, and within 24 hours of the tour the remaining amount is also non-refundable. The booking cut-off is 8 hours before the start.

The Polar Explorer icebreaker: a full day on the frozen sea

The Polar Explorer Icebreaker Cruise Experience is our biggest nature day: 8 hours 30 minutes including the round-trip shuttle from Rovaniemi to the Axelsvik terminal, from 425 €. The cruise itself lasts 2,5 hours on an authentic industrial icebreaker, with hot drinks on board, a self-guided tour with an onboard E-Guidebook in 16 languages and a local crew for your safety.

Conditions permitting, you can walk on the frozen sea and float in the ice in a survival suit, and you receive a Cruise & Swim Certificate signed by the Captain. Three practical points: the terminal is in Swedish Lapland, about 40 km from the Finnish border, so bring a valid passport or national ID; the minimum height for swimming is 125 cm; and we charge a 100 % cancellation fee if the booking is cancelled 31 days or less before the cruise. You also need your own warm clothing and winter boots for this one.

What every tour has in common, and what differs

On the Korouoma, snowshoeing and Ranua tours the standard is the same: an English-speaking guide (other languages on request, with limited availability, so message us after booking), our winter clothing, photos taken with your own device, an air-conditioned car and pick-up within 10 km of the centre. Our meeting point is Postikatu 1, 96100 Rovaniemi, and on pick-up tours we ask you to wait in your hotel lobby 10 minutes before the pick-up time.

The book-early code EARLY27 on our site saves 10 % on activities between 01.11.2026 and 31.03.2027 (husky and reindeer tours excluded); how it works is explained in our EARLY27 article.

Book this if, or choose another of our tours

Choose Korouoma if you are fit and want a real hike; choose Auttiköngäs if you want waterfalls with less effort and a sit-down lunch, and are sure of your date. Snowshoeing suits a short, calm half-day in the forest and a first taste of Kuoksa. Ranua is the right day if seeing Arctic animals is the goal. The icebreaker is for guests who want one big once-in-a-trip day and can commit early.

If what you really want is speed and snow spray, our snowmobile tours or husky tours will suit you better; if the goal is the sky, see our Northern Lights tours. For the autumn before the snow, read what we run in ruska season.

Combining a nature day with a stay at Postmaster or Aurora Hill

Both of our own places to stay, Postmaster Hotel in the centre of Rovaniemi and Aurora Hill Resort, are on the pick-up list for these tours, so you can walk from breakfast to the car. A daytime nature tour also leaves the evening free for a Northern Lights tour or dinner at Leima Kitchen & Bar. If you want help fitting several tours into your dates, write to us and we will suggest an order that works with the pick-up times.
