Northern Lights Reindeer Safari in Rovaniemi: our evening explained

Many of the questions we get in autumn are some version of the same one: can we do reindeer and the Northern Lights in one evening, without two separate trips out of Rovaniemi? That is exactly what our Northern Lights Tour Reindeer Safari is for. We take you out after dark to our family’s land at Kuoksa Wilderness Park, you ride a reindeer sleigh through the forest, and between the stories and the warm juice we keep an eye on the sky.

Pick-up and the drive to Kuoksa

The evening starts at your accommodation. Pick-up and drop-off are included within a 10 km radius of Rovaniemi city centre, and the product page lists the regular pick-up points — among them our own Postmaster Hotel and Aurora Hill Resort, the city-centre hotels, Santa Claus Holiday Village and Rovaniemi Airport. A custom pick-up is possible on request. Please be ready and waiting in your hotel lobby 10 minutes before your pick-up time.

From the city it takes about 30 minutes to reach Kuoksa Wilderness Park. Kuoksa is our private land, away from the city lights, and our family has lived in connection with it for four generations. That distance from street lighting is the whole point on an aurora evening: darker surroundings make faint Northern Lights easier to see.

What happens during the evening

At Kuoksa you meet the reindeer and the people who look after them. Before the ride we tell you about the life of reindeer, how a reindeer farm works and what reindeer herding means in Lapland — this is what we call Reindeer Stories.

Then comes the sleigh ride itself: a 2–3 km reindeer safari through the Lappish forest in the dark. The sleigh is led by a reindeer herder, who walks the route and keeps the ride smooth and safe. You sit, wrapped up, and look around — and up.

After the ride there is a warm teepee with a campfire where you can thaw out with warm berry juice and cookies. There is time for photos with your own camera or phone and to be around the reindeer. Throughout the evening the guide keeps watching the sky; if the aurora appears, you will know about it.

Timing: when the tour runs and how long it takes

The product details list the duration as 3,5 hours. In the tour’s FAQ we give the evening as a 19:00 start with arrival back in Rovaniemi city centre at around 23:00, and we note that the transfer to and from your pick-up location sits outside the activity time — so keep 15–30 minutes free before and after. If you are fitting this around a dinner reservation or an early flight, tell us your plans and we will confirm the exact pick-up time for your date.

About the Northern Lights: what we can and cannot promise

The aurora is a natural phenomenon, so we cannot guarantee a sighting. Two things have to line up: enough solar activity and a clear enough sky above Kuoksa. What we control is the setting — a dark spot away from city lights, a guide who knows where to look, and an evening that is worth it even under cloud, because the reindeer ride and the campfire happen regardless.

Who this evening suits — and who should choose another of our tours

The tour is rated easy. You do not need any experience with animals, and the herder leads the reindeer, so it works for most ages. Our recommended minimum age is 3 years, because winter conditions can be too harsh for infants, and children under 13 must be accompanied by adults paying the full price. Infants must not sit on laps. There is no maximum age, but the tour is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

Book this if you want reindeer and an aurora watch in one evening, with one pick-up and one set of warm clothes. The small print, straight from the product page

• If the weather does not allow a sleigh ride, the tour is arranged as a reindeer walk instead.
• At least 2 people are required on weekdays and Saturdays, and at least 4 on Sundays and public holidays; the tour may be cancelled or rescheduled if the group is smaller than 2.
• The tour may be cancelled or rescheduled in extreme weather conditions.
• Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the activity; cancellations less than 24 hours before are charged at 100%.

Combining it with your stay

Both of our own places — Postmaster Hotel in the city centre and Aurora Hill Resort — are on the tour’s pick-up list, so the evening fits easily into a stay with us. A common pattern is a daytime activity followed by this tour in the evening; if you plan to do that, leave enough time between the drop-off and the next pick-up and ask us to check the timings for your dates. No. The aurora depends on weather and solar activity, so we cannot guarantee a sighting. We take you to a dark location away from city lights and do our best, and the reindeer ride and campfire happen either way.
