StayLapland sauna experiences: every sauna we offer around Rovaniemi

When guests write to us about sauna, the question is rarely “do you have one?” – it is “which one should we choose?”. Over the years our sauna offer has grown into several quite different things: a private wood-heated sauna with an ice hole, a traditional sauna and jacuzzi next to the suites at Aurora Hill Resort, a full sauna world at Lapland Winter Park, summer saunas by the lake and a suite with its own sauna at Postmaster Hotel.

This article puts all of them side by side, in our own words and with the details taken straight from each product page, so you can see what actually happens on each one, what is included and which suits the evening you have in mind. If something you need to know is not covered here, ask us when booking – we would rather answer a question than have you guess.

In short: our main winter sauna is the Private Wooden Heated Sauna and Ice Swimming – from 398 €, 4 hours, with pick-up included within 10 km of Rovaniemi city centre, towels, winter clothing and a light local snack. For a shorter private sauna there is the Private Traditional Finnish Sauna & Jacuzzi use at Aurora Hill Resort (from 159 €, 1 hour 30 minutes). The Lapland Winter Park Sauna World Ticket (from 65 €, 1 hour 30 minutes) gives you eight saunas and four pools, and in summer we run the Traditional Finnish Sauna Experience with a lake swim (from 149 €, 4 hours). Our private wood-heated sauna and ice swimming, step by step

The Private Wooden Heated Sauna and Ice Swimming is the sauna we are asked about most, and the one we built our winter sauna offer around. It is a private experience in a recently renovated wooden sauna, so there are no other groups on the benches with you.

This is how the four hours run:

• Pick-up. We collect you from your accommodation – pick-ups and drop-offs within a 10 km radius of Rovaniemi city centre are included. The listed meeting point is Postikatu 1, the address of our Postmaster Hotel. Please be ready and wait in your hotel lobby 10 minutes before your pick-up time.
• Dressing for the cold. Winter clothing in adult and child sizes is included: overalls, boots, gloves and socks.
• Instructions first. Your guide explains how to use the sauna safely and how to do the cold plunge before anyone goes near the ice.
• Sauna and ice hole. The sauna is heated with wood, and there is a handmade ice hole for the cold plunge. You move between the heat and the cold plunge as you like.
• Something to eat. A local light snack and drinks are included, and towels are provided.

Clothes are optional at this private sauna – bring your own swimsuit if you prefer. A hot tub can be added as an extra for 249 €; you select it at a later stage of the booking. The small print on the ice-swimming sauna

These are the rules exactly as they stand on the product page, because they decide whether the tour runs on your date:

• At least 2 people are required for the tour to take place on weekdays and Saturdays.
• At least 4 people are required on Sundays and public holidays.
• Children under 13 years old must be accompanied by adults paying the full price.
• The product may be cancelled or rescheduled if the group size is smaller than 2 persons.
• Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the activity; a 100% cancellation fee applies if you cancel less than 24 hours before.
• Online booking closes 3 hours before the start time.
• The experience is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

The tour is guided in English. Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, French, Italian, German and Finnish are available on request, with limited availability – send us an email or a WhatsApp message after booking if you need one of them. You are welcome to take photos with your own device.

Sauna and jacuzzi at Aurora Hill Resort

At Aurora Hill Resort we offer the Private Traditional Finnish Sauna & Jacuzzi use, from 159 € for 1 hour 30 minutes. It follows an old Finnish way of bathing: there is no shower. Instead, water is heated in a tank on the electric stove and mixed with cold water, and you wash by pouring it over yourself with a ladle, the way generations of Finns have done.

The jacuzzi is yours for the same session, so you can move between the sauna, the jacuzzi and the snow outside. Included are bathrobes and slippers, towels, seat covers, soft drinks and water, a small lounge area, and private use of both the sauna and the jacuzzi. There is no transfer or guided programme – this one is simply time for yourselves.

Sauna World at Lapland Winter Park

If you would rather try many saunas in one visit, the Lapland Winter Park Sauna World Ticket (from 65 €, 1 hour 30 minutes) is the option. It is a family-friendly spa with eight different saunas, two jacuzzis, a traditional wood-heated hot tub and a cold plunge pool. The saunas are unisex, so bring a swimsuit or rent one on site. It is suitable for all ages, and the product page lists opening hours from 12:00 to 19:30.

Included are parking, the use of the eight saunas and four pools, and one bottle of water; spa slippers, a bathrobe, a towel and toiletries can be borrowed for free. Two things to note: there is no pick-up or drop-off – you make your own way to Lapland Winter Park, Ollerovaarantie 160, Rovaniemi – and bookings are non-refundable. Summer saunas: the lake instead of the ice hole

When the ice melts, the cold plunge becomes a swim. The Traditional Finnish Sauna Experience (from 149 €, 4 hours, very easy) is our summer sauna: a private, wood-heated sauna in quiet nature, with a lake for swimming between rounds. Your guide introduces local sauna customs, including the birch whisks Finns call vasta or vihta. Light snacks and drinks, towels and pick-up within 10 km of the city centre are included, and the same group-size and cancellation rules apply as on the winter sauna.

For something more active, the Midnight Sun E-Bike & Sauna Adventure (from 199 €, 4 hours) starts with a guided e-bike ride along quiet roads and forest trails to a lakeside wood-heated sauna, followed by a swim and snacks by a campfire. Please bring your own swimsuit on this one, and note that it is not recommended for children under 14.

A sauna in your own room, and sauna packages for two

At the Postmaster Hotel in the centre of Rovaniemi, the Deluxe Sauna Suite (35 m², 1–3 guests) has its own private sauna, next to a well-equipped kitchen and a soundproofed living space. If a sauna after a cold evening outside is important to you, it is the suite type to ask for.

We also build sauna into two packages for couples. The Luxury “All In One” Spa Experience with Sauna (from 1029 €) combines a 90-minute in-room massage for two with 90 minutes of private sauna and jacuzzi use – or, if you book from the Postmaster Hotel, our sauna tour at Kuoksa instead. The Anything for you – Love Celebration with Sauna (from 1499 €) adds a decorated room and a three-course dinner in your room, with the private sauna and jacuzzi at Aurora Hill or the private sauna and ice-swimming tour if you stay at Postmaster.

Which of our saunas to choose

An honest guide, based on what each experience includes:

• Book the private wood-heated sauna and ice swimming if you want the full winter ritual with a guide, the ice hole, winter clothing and a transfer, and you have at least two people (four on Sundays and public holidays).
• Choose the Aurora Hill sauna and jacuzzi instead if you want a shorter, private session without a programme, or you are staying at Aurora Hill Resort.
• Choose Sauna World if you are a family or a group who wants variety, you are happy to get there on your own, and you do not need free cancellation.
• Choose the summer lake sauna or the e-bike and sauna tour if you are visiting when the lakes are open.

Combining a sauna with your stay and other tours

Because the ice-swimming sauna includes pick-up from both the Postmaster Hotel and Aurora Hill Resort, it slots easily into a stay with us. It pairs naturally with one of our evening Northern Lights tours on another day of your stay. The winter clothing is included, so you do not need to pack extra gear for it.

What is the cancellation policy?

The private sauna and ice swimming and the summer Traditional Finnish Sauna Experience have free cancellation up to 24 hours before the activity. Sauna World tickets are non-refundable.

Is pick-up included?

Pick-up within 10 km of Rovaniemi city centre is included on the private sauna tours. Sauna World at Lapland Winter Park has no pick-up or drop-off.
