How does a snowmobile work? Track, skis and the throttle

StayLapland Snowmobile safari, tour, rovaniemi, lapland.

Most of our snowmobile guests have never touched one before. Standing next to the machine in the morning, the questions are always similar: how does it move on soft snow, how do I steer it, and how do I stop? The good news is that a snowmobile is simpler to drive than a car, because it has no gears for you to choose.

Below we explain the basic mechanics, the Finnish rules that apply to every snowmobile, and how all of this shows up when you join one of our snowmobile tours in Rovaniemi.

The short answer: a snowmobile’s engine turns a drive pulley, a belt carries that power to a second pulley connected to the track, and the rubber track under the machine pushes against the snow to move you forward. The two skis at the front do the steering. Because the belt drive is a continuously variable transmission, the ratio changes automatically with engine speed, so the driver only uses the throttle and the brake.

The drivetrain: from engine to track

The heart of a snowmobile’s drivetrain is the continuously variable transmission, usually called the CVT. Researchers at the Université de Sherbrooke describe it as two pulleys, a primary (drive) pulley and a secondary pulley, each with a fixed and a moving sheave. On a snowmobile the primary pulley is connected to the engine’s crankshaft and the secondary pulley is connected to the track.

A belt runs between the two pulleys. As the engine speeds up, the moving sheaves shift and the belt rides at a different position on each pulley, which changes the ratio between engine speed and track speed smoothly. For the driver this means there is no clutch pedal and no gear lever: you press the throttle and the machine pulls away, you release it and it slows down.

Why a track instead of wheels

Wheels press a small patch of rubber into the ground. On deep or loose snow that patch would simply sink and spin. A snowmobile instead drives a long, wide rubber track underneath the machine. The track spreads the weight of the machine and riders over a large area and grips the snow along its whole length, pushing the snowmobile forward as it turns.

That is also why a snowmobile feels different from a car: it floats and slides a little on the snow surface, and the ride is smoother on packed trails than on fresh, untouched snow.

Skis, steering and braking

At the front, two skis carry part of the weight and steer the machine. Turning the handlebar turns the skis, and the snowmobile follows. On snow you also steer a little with your body, leaning into the turn, which is something our guides show you before the ride.

The controls on the handlebar are few: a throttle and a brake. Before every tour we give detailed instructions on how to operate the snowmobile safely, and the guide rides in front at a pace that suits the group.

The rules for snowmobiles in Finland

Snowmobiles are motor vehicles, and Finland has clear rules for them. According to Traficom and the Metsähallitus permit service Eräluvat:

Our own tours have stricter age rules than the law, which we explain below.

From reindeer herding to safaris

In Lapland the snowmobile is a working vehicle long before it is a tourist activity. The Reindeer Herders’ Association (Paliskuntain yhdistys) writes that in winter reindeer are herded by snowmobile, that the snowmobile lets a herder move around the herd faster, and that it allows herders to drive home at night and get the reindeer moving quickly when needed. Visit Rovaniemi calls snowmobiling perhaps the most traditional way of getting around in Lapland’s wilderness areas.

If you are curious about the animals themselves, our story on our reindeer safari is a good next read.

How this shows up on our tours

Everything above turns into a few practical rules on our snowmobile tours. They come straight from our product pages:

Our easiest start is the Arctic Snowmobile Tour on Private Trails: 3 hours from 99 €, with about 1 hour of driving on the way to a family-owned base by a frozen lake, pick-up included within 10 km of the city centre, and cookies and juice. For a longer day, the Wilderness Snowmobile Safari (5 hours, from 199 €) includes about 2 to 2.5 hours of driving and local food by an open fire. At Lapland Winter Park we run Frozen Trails, about 45 minutes of driving (1 hour 30 minutes in total, from 99 €) with no pick-up. You can read more about the options in our snowmobile tours story.

Frequently asked questions

Do snowmobiles have gears?

Not in the way a car does. Snowmobiles use a continuously variable transmission (a belt between two pulleys) that changes the ratio automatically, so the driver only uses the throttle and the brake.

What makes a snowmobile move on snow?

The engine drives a belt, the belt turns a pulley connected to the track, and the long rubber track pushes against the snow. The skis at the front steer.

Do I need a driving licence to drive a snowmobile on your tours?

Yes. On our tours the driver must be 18 or older and have a driver’s licence. Passengers, such as twin-drive passengers or children in the sled, do not need one.

Can children ride on a snowmobile?

On our tours a child who is 140 cm or taller can sit on the snowmobile paying the adult price. Shorter children ride in a sled pulled by the guide’s snowmobile.

Do I need previous experience?

No. Our guides give detailed instructions on how to operate the snowmobile safely before the tour starts.

Is a helmet required?

Yes. Finnish rules make a helmet compulsory for drivers and passengers, and we provide a helmet and a balaclava on our tours.
