Ice thickness safety in Finland: how thick lake ice must be

StayLapland Ice Fishing at Private Kuoksa lake

Every winter, frozen lakes become part of daily life in Finland: people walk, ski, skate and fish on them. Because we take guests out onto the ice on our ice fishing tours, one question comes up again and again: how thick does the ice need to be before it is safe?

Below we summarise the official Finnish guidance, published by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) on the national water service Vesi.fi and by the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation (SUH). The figures are theirs; the sources are listed at the end of this post.

The short answer: according to SYKE, one person walking alone needs at least 5 cm of clear, hard ice (in Finnish teräsjää, literally “steel ice”); SUH recommends 10 cm where possible. A snowmobile needs at least 15 cm along the whole route, and 15–20 cm of clear ice carries a 1,000 kg car. White, porous snow ice carries only about half as much as clear ice, and spring ice can fail even when it is half a metre thick.

The Finnish rule of thumb, in numbers

The official guidance counts only clear ice — the hard, transparent layer. These are the figures published by SYKE and SUH:

Vesi.fi puts the first figure in concrete terms: 5 cm of clear ice is needed to carry an 80 kg pedestrian safely.

Clear ice versus white ice

Not all ice is equal. Clear ice (teräsjää) looks like clear glass: transparent and even. White ice (kohvajää) is pale, matt and porous.

According to SYKE, white ice carries only about half the load of clear ice. In practice this means that a 10 cm layer that is half white ice is much weaker than it looks. This is why the Finnish figures always refer to clear ice, not to the total thickness you might see at the edge of a hole.

How the load spreads, and why groups keep their distance

Ice does not carry weight only directly under your feet. Vesi.fi explains that a load affects an area of roughly 100 times the ice thickness in centimetres. That is why people moving on ice together are told to spread out: according to Vesi.fi, two 80 kg people walking on the ice should keep about 10 metres apart.

Vesi.fi also gives a simple rule of thumb for clear ice: multiply the thickness in centimetres by itself and then by five. For 5 cm of clear ice that gives 5 × 5 × 5 = 125 kg. Treat it as an illustration of how quickly carrying capacity grows with thickness, not as a licence to cut margins.

Where ice is weaker than it looks

Thickness is not uniform across a lake. SUH lists the places where ice is typically weaker and should be avoided:

The most important seasonal warning concerns spring. SUH writes that spring ice can give way under a person even when it is half a metre thick, and that weather can weaken it dramatically within hours.

The kit Finns carry on the ice

SUH’s checklist for moving on ice is practical and short. The minimum is a pair of ice picks (naskalit) worn ready around your neck. For regular ice users SUH also recommends:

And the rule SUH puts first: never go alone. In their words, a companion is your best piece of safety equipment.

If the ice breaks: the self-rescue steps

SUH’s guide Järki jäällä describes what to do if you go through the ice:

  1. Turn back towards the direction you came from — that ice has already carried you.
  2. Break the thin ice in front of you with your elbows as far as it breaks.
  3. Take the ice picks in your hands, kick with your legs to get your body horizontal, and pull yourself up onto the ice with the picks.
  4. Roll, crawl and move on all fours until you are certain you are on solid ice.

This is exactly why SUH lists a phone in a waterproof case, with the 112 emergency app, among the things to carry.

How this shows up on our tours

On our ice fishing tours you do not have to judge the ice yourself. Our guides take you to the fishing spot and lead the way on the ice; your job is to follow their instructions. On Ice Fishing at Private Kuoksa lake we dress you in thermal overalls, winter boots, beanies and mittens, prepare all the ice fishing equipment and show you how to use it. The tour lasts 3,5 hours, is rated easy and starts from 89 €.

If you would like to combine the lake with something else, Ice Fishing with Reindeer starts with a 2–3 km reindeer safari, and Ice Fishing with Snowmobiles includes about one hour of snowmobile driving in total. On the snowmobile tour the product page states a temperature limit of −35 °C, and −25 °C for small children. All our ice fishing tours are collected on our ice fishing tours page, and our season overview is in our ice fishing tours for 2026–2027. For what we lend you to wear, see the winter gear provided on our tours.

Our advice for your own time in Lapland is simple: if you are not with a guide and you do not know the ice, stay off it.
