Every activity page on our site has a small line that says Difficulty. It is one of the things guests ask us about most, usually in a WhatsApp message the evening before a tour: “Will I manage this?” It is a fair question. A winter day in Lapland feels different from a walk at home, and a label on its own does not tell you much.
So this is our own explanation of the four difficulty levels we use on StayLapland tours, what they say about the day you are booking, what they do not say, and which of our tours sit at each level. Everything below comes from our product pages; where a page does not answer a question, we tell you to ask us rather than guess.
The short answer: our tours are graded Very easy, Easy, Moderate or Challenging. Most of our programme is Very easy or Easy. The one public tour we mark Challenging is the Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls Hike (from 139 €, 6 hours, pick-up included within 10 km of Rovaniemi city centre). Even there, our own FAQ describes the walk as slow, with plenty of stops.

The four levels you will see on our tour pages
On each product page the difficulty sits next to the experience type, the duration and the booking cut-off. We use four levels:
- Very easy – you mostly sit, stand or walk a short way. Our Northern Lights Tour At The Campfire (from 99 €, 3 hours) and the Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure (from 159 €, 3 hours) are both graded Very easy.
- Easy – there is something active to do, such as driving a snowmobile, walking on snowshoes or riding behind a husky team, but no long physical effort. Examples: the Wilderness Snowmobile Safari (from 199 €, 5 hours), the Snowshoeing Tour in the Private Kuoksa Wilderness (from 89 €, 3,5 hours) and the Nulkki Husky Adventure (from 189 €, 4 hours).
- Moderate – a longer day with a real walking element. The Frozen Waterfalls & Hidden Café Lunch (from 159 €, 5 hours) is graded Moderate.
- Challenging – the longest walking day we run: the Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls Hike (6 hours) and its private version.
You can browse every tour with its label in our activities in Rovaniemi.

What the label measures, and what it does not
The difficulty label describes the physical side of the activity itself: how much you walk, whether you operate anything, how long you are active. It is a guide, not a medical assessment, and it does not replace your own judgement or advice from your doctor.
A few things the label does not tell you:
- The cold. A Very easy tour is still outdoors in Lapland winter. We provide warm clothing on all our activities – overalls, woollen socks, gloves, hats and warm shoes, in all sizes – but sitting still by a fire in the dark is a different experience from walking.
- Accessibility. The tours in this article are marked on their pages as not wheelchair accessible and not stroller accessible, including the Very easy ones.
- Age rules. These are set per tour, not per level. For example, our snowshoeing tour is not recommended for children under 7, while the Korouoma hike is not recommended for children under 3.
- Weather. Our tours may be cancelled or rescheduled in extreme weather conditions, whatever their level.
If any of this matters for your group, write to us before booking and we will answer for the specific tour.
Very easy: tours where the landscape comes to you
Our Very easy tours are built around sitting, watching and listening. On the Northern Lights Tour At The Campfire we collect you (pick-ups and drop-offs are included within a 10 km radius of Rovaniemi city centre), drive out of the city lights, and wait for the aurora by the fire with local snacks and drinks while the guide explains the Northern Lights.
The Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure is also Very easy: it includes a 2–3 km reindeer safari in the forest, where the reindeer do the pulling, plus information about the life of reindeer and reindeer herding. If the weather does not allow a sleigh ride, the tour is arranged as a reindeer walk instead – still gentle, but on foot.
These are the tours we suggest when someone in the group is unsure about physical effort. See more in our reindeer activities.
Easy: active, but short and guided
Easy tours ask a little more of you. On the Wilderness Snowmobile Safari you drive yourself for about 2 to 2,5 hours in total, after detailed instructions on how to operate the snowmobile safely. The product page is clear on the rules: you must be 18 or older and hold a driver’s licence to drive; passengers do not need one. Children shorter than 140 cm ride in a sled pulled by the guide’s snowmobile, and taller children can sit on a snowmobile at the adult price.
The Snowshoeing Tour in the Private Kuoksa Wilderness is Easy too: snowshoes and ski poles are included, the guide sets the pace, and there is a traditional teepee on the route for snacks and drinks. The Nulkki Husky Adventure sits at the same level.
If you can walk comfortably for an hour or so and are happy to follow instructions, Easy is well within reach. More options are in our snowmobile activities.

Moderate: a longer day with a walk at its heart
The Frozen Waterfalls & Hidden Café Lunch is graded Moderate. The product page describes an approximately one-hour drive from Rovaniemi to the frozen waterfalls of Auttiköngäs, a walk around the waterfalls and the nature trails nearby, and a homemade lunch at a local cabin café (salmon soup or vegetable soup). Warm clothes are provided, and pick-ups are included within 10 km of the city centre.
The step up from Easy is mainly time on your feet outdoors over a 5-hour day. One practical note from the page: bookings for this tour are non-refundable.
Challenging: our Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls Hike
The Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls Hike is the tour we grade Challenging. Korouoma is a Finnish nature reserve known in winter for its frozen waterfalls, where you can also find ice climbers. The activity starts at 9:00 and lasts 6 hours, and transfer time to and from your pick-up point comes on top of that.
Why Challenging, when our own FAQ says the hike itself “is not too strenuous and is done very slowly with plenty of stops”? Because it is the longest walking day in our programme, outdoors in winter conditions – which is why ice grippers for your shoes are part of the kit. We would rather set expectations high and have you surprised by how gentle the pace feels than the other way round.
Our FAQ is also direct about who should choose another tour: the hike is not recommended for people with mobility challenges or serious medical problems.
What is included on the Korouoma hike
From the product page, the tour includes:
- A tour guide in English (other languages on request, with limited availability – contact us after booking)
- Winter clothing in adult and child sizes: overalls, boots, gloves, socks
- Ice grippers for the shoes
- Local berry juice and light snacks
- Information about the nature reserve area
- Pick-ups and drop-offs within 10 km of Rovaniemi city centre, in an air-conditioned car
- Photos taken with your own device
The small print: at least 2 people are required on weekdays and Saturdays and at least 4 on Sundays and public holidays; children under 13 must be accompanied by adults paying the full price; please wait in your hotel lobby 10 minutes before pick-up. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the activity; after that the fee is 100%.
Choosing the right level for your group
Our honest advice: pick the level that suits the least confident person in your group, not the fittest. A day in the snow is more tiring than the same distance at home, and everyone enjoys the tour more when nobody is struggling.
- Book Korouoma if your group walks regularly, wants a full day in a dramatic winter landscape and is happy to be outdoors for six hours.
- Choose the Frozen Waterfalls & Hidden Café Lunch instead if you want frozen waterfalls with a shorter day and a warm lunch indoors.
- Choose a Very easy or Easy tour if anyone in the group has mobility concerns, or if you are combining several activities in a short stay.
Guests staying at Postmaster Hotel or Aurora Hill Resort can be picked up there for the Korouoma hike – both are on the pick-up list. For the wider winter picture, see our Northern Lights season 2026–2027 guide, and for our autumn traditions, the reindeer roundup explained.
