People often ask us what Aurora Hill Resort actually is, where it sits and how it fits with the tours we run. The short version: it is our own family-owned resort on a hill outside Rovaniemi, built around handcrafted cabins and the night sky above them. This article walks through the place the way we would show it to you on arrival.

Aurora Hill Resort is StayLapland’s resort on a hill about 10 km (around 10 minutes) from Rovaniemi city centre, described on our site as the highest located resort in Rovaniemi. Where Aurora Hill Resort is, and why we built it on a hill

Aurora Hill sits above a quiet valley just outside Rovaniemi. On our resort page we put the distance at about 10 km from the city centre, roughly a 10-minute drive, and we describe it as the highest located resort in Rovaniemi. The reason for the height is simple: a hill gives you open sky and less light from the town, which is what you want on an aurora night.

The place has a family story behind it. As we tell it in our story of Aurora Hill, it began with a single cabin, handcrafted by a grandfather who believed that nature should be shared, not conquered. His children grew up under the northern lights, and today their children welcome guests from around the world. That is why we call it a family-owned retreat rather than a hotel: the people running it are the family that built it.

Our four cabins at Aurora Hill

Every cabin has a bathroom, a separate WC and a kitchenette. The differences are size, beds and how many people sleep comfortably:

• Aurora Suite — 23 m², 1–2 guests, 2 beds. Our choice for couples who want peace and quiet.
• Aurora Suite Plus — 25 m², 1–3 guests, a main double bed plus a sofa bed. A little more room for a couple or a small family.
• Aurora Sky Suite — 25 m², 1–3 guests, a double bed under a glass roof for Northern Lights viewing, plus a sofa bed.
• Aurora Family Suite — 31 m², 1–4 guests, the largest cabin, with a separate bedroom, 2 beds and a large sofa bed for two.

If watching the sky from bed is the whole point of your trip, the Aurora Sky Suite is the one with the glass roof. For families of four, the Family Suite is the cabin with a separate bedroom, which makes early nights for children much easier.

Breakfast delivered to your cabin

Breakfast is included in the price of every stay. We put together a breakfast of fresh ingredients and deliver it daily to your cabin, so your morning starts at your own table rather than in a queue. If you have dietary needs, tell us when you book so we can plan for them.

Northern Lights at the resort: the alert app

Every guest gets free access to our Northern Lights Alert App during the stay. It sends real-time notifications when the Northern Lights appear at the resort, and you can set the sensitivity to Low, Medium or High, so you will not miss a display even if you have gone to sleep.

We are careful about promises here. The aurora is a natural phenomenon and no one can guarantee it on a given night; what the hill, the dark surroundings and the app give you is a good chance of noticing it when it happens. The private Finnish sauna and Jacuzzi

Our Private Traditional Finnish Sauna & Jacuzzi use at Aurora Hill Resort is a 1 hour 30 minute private session from 159 €. It follows a centuries-old Finnish tradition, and one detail surprises many guests: there is no shower. Instead, water is heated in a tank on the electric stove and mixed with cold water, and you wash by pouring it over yourself with a ladle, the way generations of Finns have done before.

Alongside the sauna you have the private Jacuzzi, and you can move between the sauna, the Jacuzzi and the snow outside at your own pace. Included in the session:

• Bathrobes and slippers
• Towels and seat covers
• Soft drinks and water
• A small lounge area
• Private sauna use and private Jacuzzi use

Tours with pick-up straight from the resort

Aurora Hill is also a base for our activities. Many experiences in our private Kuoksa Wilderness Park come with pick-up and drop-off straight from the resort, and Aurora Hill Resort is on the pick-up list of tours such as the Northern Lights Tour At The Campfire (from 99 €, 3 hours) and the Northern Lights Tour in Atmospheric Cottage (from 109 €, 3 hours). Who Aurora Hill suits, and when to choose another of our places

Book Aurora Hill if you want quiet, a cabin of your own, breakfast at your door and the sky close by, while still being around 10 minutes from the city. It suits couples, families and small groups who are happy to be picked up for tours rather than walking to restaurants and shops.

If you would rather step straight out into the streets of Rovaniemi, our Postmaster Hotel in the heart of Rovaniemi, next to the railway and bus station, may suit you better.
