Guests often ask us what actually happens on the Northern Lights Snowmobile Adventure at Lapland Winter Park. It is one of the simplest ways to combine two Lapland classics in a single evening: driving a snowmobile yourself through snowy forest trails after dark, and keeping an eye on the sky for the aurora while you do it.
This article walks through the evening the way we run it — where you meet us, what the guide explains, what is included in the price and what is not, and the small print from the product page that is worth reading before you book. At the end we are honest about who should pick this tour and who will be happier on one of our other evenings.
In short: the Northern Lights Snowmobile Adventure at Lapland Winter Park costs from 149 €, lasts 2 hours 30 minutes and includes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes of snowmobile driving, full winter thermal clothing, a professional guide, insurance and a BBQ by the fire. Where we meet: Lapland Winter Park
This tour starts and ends at our own base, Lapland Winter Park, at Ollerovaarantie 160, 96100 Rovaniemi. Unlike our city-based evening tours, there is no hotel pick-up on this one — the product page is clear that the price does not include pick-up or drop-off, so please plan your own way there and back.
According to the tour’s FAQ, the activity starts at 20:00 daily. We recommend reserving 15–30 minutes before and after the activity, so you have time to change into the winter gear without rushing and to warm up properly at the end.

Gear-up and the safety briefing
When you arrive, we dress you for the Arctic evening. The included winter thermal clothing covers overalls, boots, gloves, balaclavas and helmets, and the FAQ adds that our clothing comes in all sizes, so you do not need to buy anything special for the trip.
Before anyone starts an engine, your guide gives clear instructions on how to drive a snowmobile safely. You do not need any previous snowmobile experience — the briefing is there exactly for first-timers. What you do need, if you want to drive, is a valid driving licence and to be 18 or older.
On the trail: about 1 hour 15 minutes of driving
The heart of the evening is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes of snowmobile driving along snowy trails, following your guide in a line. The listed price includes a shared snowmobile, two people per machine, so couples and friends usually swap between driving and riding behind. If you would rather have a snowmobile to yourself, a single-driver option is available at an extra cost.
Because this is an evening tour, much of the ride is in the dark, away from the brightest lights of the city. That is what gives you a chance to see the Northern Lights if the sky is clear and the aurora is active. We want to be straightforward about this: the aurora is a natural phenomenon, and this tour does not come with a Northern Lights guarantee. It is a snowmobile evening with a real chance of aurora, not a dedicated aurora hunt.
BBQ by the fire
After the ride, we finish around the fire with a BBQ. It is a good moment to warm your hands, talk through the ride and — if the sky has been kind — compare photos of the aurora. The BBQ is included in the price; there is nothing extra to pay at the fire.

Children and families on this tour
Families are welcome, and a sledge for children is part of what is included. The rules come straight from the product page:
- Children shorter than 140 cm ride in the sled pulled by the snowmobile, which is driven by our guide.
- Children 140 cm or taller can sit on the snowmobile as a passenger, paying the adult price.
- Children under 13 must be accompanied by adults paying the full price.
- The recommended minimum age is 3 years, as winter conditions can be too harsh for infants.
There is no upper age limit. The tour is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

Book this if — or choose another of our evenings
Book this tour if you want to drive a snowmobile yourself in the dark, you are happy to make your own way to Lapland Winter Park, and you like the idea of ending the night with a BBQ by the fire. It fits well into a short evening slot, at 2 hours 30 minutes.
Choose something else if:
- You need hotel pick-up — our Northern Lights Tour Snowmobile Driving includes pick-ups and drop-offs within a 10 km radius of Rovaniemi city centre, lasts 4 hours and ends with local food and drinks by the campfire in a teepee.
- You mainly want to try snowmobiling and do not need the evening darkness — Frozen Trails: 1-Hour Snowmobile Ride at Lapland Winter Park is from 99 €, with approximately 45 minutes of driving and warm juice and cookies.
- Seeing the aurora is your top priority — our Professional Small Group Northern Lights Hunting Tour follows the clearest skies each night and carries a money-back guarantee if we do not capture the Northern Lights.
You can see all our options in the snowmobile activities and Northern Lights activities collections, and our Northern Lights season 2026–2027 overview explains how our aurora evenings fit together.
