Aurora Sky Suite in Rovaniemi: sleeping under our glass roof

The question we hear most about Aurora Hill Resort is a simple one: what is it actually like to sleep in the Aurora Sky Suite? People have seen the photos of a bed under a glass roof and want to know the practical side — how big the cabin is, how many people fit, what is included and what you still need to arrange yourself.

We are a local, family-owned company and we built Aurora Hill Resort ourselves, so this is our own explanation of the suite, taken from the facts on our accommodation page. Where something depends on your dates or the weather, we say so.

The Aurora Sky Suite is a 25 m² one-room cabin at Aurora Hill Resort in Rovaniemi, for 1–3 guests, from 490 €. The suite in one paragraph

The Aurora Sky Suite is a spacious one-room cabin of 25 m². The double bed sits directly beneath a glass roof, so you can look up at the starry Arctic sky from bed and, with a little luck, the Northern Lights. An additional sofa bed (listed as an armchair bed in the amenities) makes it work for two or three guests: couples, friends, or a parent travelling with a child.

Where Aurora Hill Resort is

Aurora Hill Resort sits in the peaceful surroundings of Ollerovaara, which we describe as Rovaniemi’s highest resort area. It is about a 10-minute drive from the city centre. The locations page explains the practical side: the easiest way to reach us is by private car or taxi, from the city centre or directly from the airport, and there is free parking for guests on site.

The height matters for one reason: the views and a peaceful natural environment away from the brightest city lights. We never promise auroras — nobody honestly can — but a clear, dark sky above your bed is exactly why the glass roof is there.

What is included in your stay

These are the included services listed for the Aurora Sky Suite:

Inside the cabin you will find bed linen, towels, shampoo and body soap, a hair dryer, extra pillows and blankets, a TV, heating with underfloor heating, and air conditioning. The kitchenette has pots and pans, a microwave, a coffee maker, an electric kettle, a refrigerator, a stove, and dishes and cutlery — enough to make your own tea after a cold evening outside or a simple meal.

For safety every cabin has a smoke alarm, a carbon monoxide alarm, a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher.

How the Northern Lights Alert App works for you

Guests at Aurora Hill Resort get free access to the Northern Lights Alert App. It sends real-time notifications when the Northern Lights appear at the resort, and you can set the alert sensitivity to three levels — Low, Medium and High — so you won’t miss the auroras even while you sleep.

In practice that means you do not need to stay awake watching the sky all night. Go to bed, set the level that suits you, and let the app wake you if something happens overhead. Then you can simply look up through the glass roof, or put on warm clothes and step outside for a wider view.

Adding a private sauna and jacuzzi evening

Our Private Traditional Finnish Sauna & Jacuzzi use at Aurora Hill Resort is the natural pairing for a night in the suite. It lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and is priced from 159 €. It follows a centuries-old Finnish tradition: there is no shower. Instead, water is heated in a tank on the electric stove and mixed with cold water, and you wash by pouring it over yourself with a ladle — the way generations of Finns have done before.

Alongside the sauna you have a private jacuzzi, so you can move between the sauna, the jacuzzi and the snowy land around it. Included are bathrobes and slippers, towels, seat covers, soft drinks and water, a small lounge area, and private use of both the sauna and the jacuzzi.

For a special occasion there is also the Luxury “All In One”- Spa Experience with Sauna, designed for two: a simultaneous 90-minute in-room massage by two professional massage therapists, then private Finnish sauna and jacuzzi use for 90 minutes, with a bottle of Champagne, fresh berries and a Finnish chocolate platter, face sheet masks, Rituals travel-sized products, bathrobes and slippers.

Activities from the resort

StayLapland is also an activity company. Reindeer and husky rides, snowmobiling, Northern Lights tours and Arctic saunas are available through our private activity destination, Kuoksa Wilderness Park, and the resort page confirms pick-up and drop-off straight from the resort for these experiences. Lapland Winter Park is just a stone’s throw away from the resort, with activities such as Rovaniemi’s longest sledding hill and ice karting — an easy option for families who want something fun without a long transfer.

Which of our cabins to choose

Aurora Hill Resort has four cabin types, and the right one depends mostly on how many of you are travelling:

• Aurora Suite — 23 m², 1–2 guests, for couples.
• Aurora Suite Plus — 25 m², 1–3 guests, a main double bed and a sofa bed.
• Aurora Sky Suite — 25 m², 1–3 guests, a double bed under a glass roof and a sofa bed.
• Aurora Family Suite — 31 m², 1–4 guests, our largest cabin with a separate bedroom.

Book the Aurora Sky Suite if watching the sky from bed is the point of your trip and you are two or three people. Choose another cabin instead if you are four (the Family Suite has the space and a separate bedroom), or if the glass roof is not important to you.
