Postmaster Hotel Rovaniemi: our family hotel in the old post office

Postmaster Hotel Superior Twin room in Rovaniemi. Hotelli Rovaniemi. Lapland, Finland. Accommodation Rovaniemi

Guests often write to us before they arrive with the same handful of questions: where exactly is the Postmaster Hotel, what are the rooms like, is breakfast included, and can we be picked up for tours from the door? This article answers all of them in one place, in the words of the people who run the hotel.

The Postmaster Hotel is part of StayLapland, a family business. We run the hotel, Leima Kitchen & Bar on the same premises, Aurora Hill Resort just outside the city and our activities in Kuoksa Wilderness Park, so a stay here is designed to connect easily with everything else we do.

In short: the Postmaster Hotel is a boutique hotel at Postikatu 1 in the centre of Rovaniemi, in a building from the 1950s that housed the city’s post office. It has four suite types (Superior Twin Suite, Deluxe Suite, Deluxe Sauna Suite and Family Suite), each with a private bathroom and a kitchenette. Breakfast is included for hotel guests and served at Leima Kitchen & Bar, and our tours pick up straight from the hotel. The reception answers on +358 40 501 0660.

A hotel in Rovaniemi’s historic post office building

The Postmaster Hotel sits in a building from the 1950s – the historic Post Office building of Rovaniemi. The name is not a gimmick. For a long time the post office was one of the services that kept Lapland connected: messages, goods and people moved through it, and without that steady traffic much of the region would have been cut off from the rest of the world. Rovaniemi was, much as it still is, the gateway to Lapland, served by air, rail and road.

We think of the hotel as carrying on that tradition of delivering on promises in the North. Travellers often arrive tired after a long journey but eager to make the most of a short stay, and our job is to make the practical side easy: a good bed, a proper breakfast and activities that start at the front door.

StayLapland is a family business. For four generations our family has cared for the forests and lakes of Kuoksa, and today three brothers carry on that work. While you are staying with us, you are part of the family too.

Where the hotel is and how to get here

The address is Postikatu 1, Rovaniemi, right in the city centre. The hotel is about 50 metres from the bus station and 300 metres from the train station, so if you arrive by train or coach you can simply walk over with your luggage.

Restaurants, shops and the riverfront are a short walk away. If you arrive early or leave late, you can leave your bags in our luggage storage at the hotel – it is free for hotel guests and for our activity customers.

Our rooms and suites

All four room types have Scandinavian-style interiors, a private bathroom and WC, a kitchenette and free Wi-Fi. Pets are allowed in every suite type for a pet fee of 30 € per stay.

If a private sauna after a cold evening outdoors matters to you, book the Deluxe Sauna Suite – it is the only suite type at the hotel with its own sauna. You can see photos and current availability on the Postmaster Hotel page.

Breakfast at Leima Kitchen & Bar

Breakfast is always included for our in-house guests. It is served as a buffet at Leima Kitchen & Bar, every day from 6:30 to 9:30. Walk-in guests who are not staying with us are welcome too, for 22 € per person.

We build the buffet from local and Finnish ingredients. A typical morning includes:

Tours that start at the front door

A practical reason to stay at the Postmaster Hotel is that it sits at the centre of our activity operation. The meeting point for many of our tours is Postikatu 1 – the hotel’s own address – and the Postmaster Hotel is on the pick-up list for our activities. Pick-ups and drop-offs within a 10 km radius of Rovaniemi city centre are included in the price of our tours.

In practice, that means you wait in the hotel lobby about 10 minutes before your pick-up time, and the guide collects you there. Many of our daytime activities take place in our private Kuoksa Wilderness Park, and in the evenings our Northern Lights tours leave from the same place. The Northern Lights Tour at the Campfire (from 99 €, 3 hours) is an easy first evening from the hotel: warm winter clothing is included, and you wait for the lights by the campfire with a snack and a hot drink.

If you would rather start from our safari office, it is at Pekankatu 3, within walking distance of the city centre.

Combining a stay with Aurora Hill Resort and our tours

You can also split a trip between two of our places: a few nights in the city at the Postmaster Hotel, close to the stations, restaurants and pick-ups, and a few nights at Aurora Hill Resort in Ollerovaara, about a 10-minute drive from the city centre, where the cabins have a view of the sky. Aurora Hill Resort includes access to a Northern Lights Alert App during your stay.

For the evenings in town, the Northern Lights Tour in Atmospheric Cottage (from 109 €, 3 hours) is a quieter alternative to the campfire: you wait for the auroras in a traditional Finnish cottage over 100 years old, by a lake. Both tours include pick-up from the hotel and winter clothing for adults and children.

Choose the Postmaster Hotel if you want to walk everywhere, arrive by train or bus, and have a simple base for several tours. Choose Aurora Hill Resort if your priority is watching the sky from your own cabin. You can also combine the two.
