Northern Lights Tour at the Campfire, Rovaniemi: our evening explained

StayLapland Northern Lights Sleigh Ride activity. Northern Lights tour, northern lights safari. Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland. Aurora borealis

Of all the evenings we run in Rovaniemi, the Northern Lights Tour at the Campfire is the one guests ask us about most. It is our simplest aurora evening: we collect you, dress you for the Arctic, drive you out of the city lights and wait for the sky with you beside a fire. People want to know exactly what happens during those three hours, what is included in the price, and whether it is the right choice compared with our other aurora tours.

This article answers those questions in plain terms. Everything below comes from our own product page — the inclusions, the rules and the small print — so you can book knowing precisely what you are getting, and choose a different evening with us if this one is not the best fit.

In short: the Northern Lights Tour At The Campfire costs from 99 € per person and lasts 3 hours. According to our tour FAQ it starts at 20:00, and you are back in Rovaniemi city centre at around 23:00. We pick you up within a 10 km radius of the centre, lend you full winter clothing, and take you to our viewing spot at Kuoksa Wilderness Park, where you wait for the auroras by a campfire in a teepee with a local snack and a hot drink. The difficulty is rated very easy.

Step one: pick-up and warm clothing

The evening begins at your accommodation. Pick-ups and drop-offs are included in the price within a 10 km radius of Rovaniemi city centre, in an air-conditioned car. Our listed pick-up points include Postmaster Hotel, Aurora Hill Resort, Santa Claus Holiday Village, Rovaniemi Airport, the bus station and many hotels in the centre — and custom pick-up is possible on request. The meeting point, if you prefer to come to us, is Postikatu 1, 96100 Rovaniemi.

Please be ready and waiting in your hotel lobby 10 minutes before your scheduled pick-up time. Our FAQ notes that transfer time is outside the three-hour activity duration, so we recommend keeping 15–30 minutes free before and after.

Before we head out, everyone gets winter clothing in adult and child sizes: overalls, boots, gloves and socks. You do not need to bring Arctic gear of your own — just dress in normal warm layers underneath.

Step two: the drive to Kuoksa Wilderness Park

From the city we drive about 30 minutes to Kuoksa Wilderness Park, which is on our family’s private land, away from the city lights. Our family has lived in connection with the lands of Kuoksa for four generations, and this is the place we use as our own Northern Lights viewing spot.

Leaving the city lights behind matters: a dark horizon gives you a far better chance of noticing a faint aurora, and it also means you are in quiet Lapland forest rather than on a roadside. If you want to understand why darkness and clear skies matter so much, our article on how auroras are formed explains the science.

Step three: waiting for the sky by the fire

At Kuoksa you wait by a crackling campfire inside a cosy teepee, with a local snack and a hot drink. The guide shares information about the Northern Lights — what you are looking for, and what the conditions mean on the night. When the sky shows activity, you step out to the viewing spot to watch.

This is the heart of the tour: it is a fixed-location evening. We do not drive around chasing clear skies; we give you a warm, comfortable place to be outdoors in the Arctic night, with the fire close by. Photos are taken with your own device, so bring a charged phone or camera.

The guide speaks English, and other languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, German and Finnish) are available on request with limited availability. If you need another language, send us an email or WhatsApp after booking.

Will we see the Northern Lights?

We will be honest here, as our FAQ is: the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and we cannot guarantee a sighting on this tour, because it depends on weather and solar activity. What we can promise is a dark, quiet spot away from the city, a warm place to wait and a guide who knows what to look for.

Our FAQ also notes that in Lapland the Northern Lights are visible over a period of more than eight months, from early August until late April. If a guaranteed-style evening matters more to you than the campfire atmosphere, look at our Professional Guaranteed Northern Lights Hunting Tour from Rovaniemi by Bus (from 109 €), which moves with the weather and offers a 100% refund if the guides do not capture any auroras. You can read more about viewing conditions in where to see the Northern Lights.

Exactly what is included — and what is not

Straight from the product page, the price includes:

Not included: professional photography (photos are taken on your own device), and pick-ups further than 10 km from the centre — ask us about a custom pick-up if you are staying further out. The tour is not wheelchair accessible and not stroller accessible.

Who this tour suits — and who should choose another of our evenings

The campfire tour suits travellers who want an easy, atmospheric first night in Lapland: difficulty is rated very easy, there is no long walking, and you spend the evening in one place with a fire. It works well for couples and groups of friends who want the experience of the Arctic night as much as the aurora itself.

For small children, our own FAQ recommends a different option. The recommended minimum age for participation is 3 years, and for Northern Lights activities we highly recommend the Northern Lights Tour in Atmospheric Cottage (from 109 €), because it provides a warm indoor space for children — a traditional Finnish cottage over 100 years old, by a lake. There is no maximum age limit.

If you would like animals in the evening, the Northern Lights Tour Reindeer Safari (from 179 €, 3,5 hours) adds a 2–3 km reindeer safari in Lappish forest while you watch the sky.

Book this if you want a relaxed, very easy evening outdoors by a fire at a private, dark location, at our lowest aurora price. Choose another tour if you need a refund-backed guarantee (the bus tour), an indoor base for small children (the cottage) or reindeer on the same night (the reindeer safari).

If the departure you want is already closed or sold out, or you are booking for a larger group, contact us by WhatsApp or email and we will try to arrange a departure for you.

Combining the evening with your stay and other tours

Because pick-up is included within 10 km of the centre, the campfire tour fits easily into a stay at our own Postmaster Hotel in the heart of Rovaniemi, next to the railway and bus station, or at Aurora Hill Resort — both are on the pick-up list. Many guests book it on their first evening and keep daytime free for other activities.

From 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 our early-booking code on the site gives 10% off winter activities (husky and reindeer tours excluded) — you will see the details on the booking card. Browse all our activities in Rovaniemi to plan the rest of your days.
